Sea Creatures Clayart

Most of the main pottery companies have had flirtations with using various marine themed designs. The sleek, sinuous and diverse shapes of most aquatic animals make them an obvious choice for decorating   curvy pottery forms and the multitude of intense colours in the sea world are well suited to the rich glazing palettes. I have included some examples from Moorcroft, Martin Brothers, Haeger, Royal Doulton, Hornsea, Bornholm, Zsolnay and other fine works from individual ceramicists.

Ancient Octopus pottery - National Archaeological Museum in Athens

Sea creatures were widely represented in the decoration of pottery during the Minoan Civilization ( Crete ), which dates back to 7000BC. The octopus motif became popular around 2700BC to 1500BC and was later adopted by the Mycenaeans. Use of the octopus motif was so widespread that it has been speculated it was an object of worship or mystical significance. The “marine style” developed to include pottery which were covered with fish, octopuses, dolphins, starfish and crabs. The Minoans were organised as a seafaring nation, and it is possible their preference of decoration was an expression of reverence to the sea, which offered protection (navy), wealth (commerce) and food (fish). Such vases and jars were made by trained craftsmen and were prized throughout the Levant ( Eastern Mediterranean ), Egypt, Geece and Northern Africa.

Early Japanese societies and other East Asian cultures used pottery before developing agriculture, and seafood was a dietary mainstay, so it’s no surprise that marine life decoration also appeared on their pottery wares. Early Christians attached special significance to the symbol of the fish and they became associated with specific Christian rituals, including the thanksgiving meal (eucharist) and baptism, and pottery fish decorations were popular in the countries of Christendom. French majolica Palissy wares, developed by Bernard Palissy in the 1500′s, then rediscovered in the 19th century, also represents another ceramic era where aquatic animals were prominently featured in its rustique style.

A ceramic Egyptian “bolti ”  ( Nile perch ) whose breeding habits attracted the Egyptians’ attention. After the female perch lays her eggs, the fish draws them into her mouth, where they stay until they hatch and the young emerge. The Egyptians saw this as a kind of spontaneous generation and thus took the perch as a symbol of resurrection and rebirth. The figure is hollow and contains several clay pellets, representing the eggs, which when shaken served as a rattle,

Jingdezhen Porcelain, China

The city of Jingdezhen (also Jingde Zhen) has been a central place of porcelain  production since the early Han Dynasty. In 1004 AD, Jingde established the city as the main production hub for Imperial porcelain. This famous ancient ceramic production center, is located in Jiangxi province on the Kon River portion of the Yangtse river valley about 200 miles (320 kilometers) from Nanking, China. The pottery ” china ” from Jingdezhen was regarded as blue as the sky, bright as a mirror, thin as paper and it sounds like a chime. The Shiwan Town of Foshan City, Guangdong Province,  is also a famous pottery production places in China, renown for its ceramic sculptures.  The artistry of Shiwan pottery developed in the beginning with the production of functional items for daily use, and , gradually formed its own style starting in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It reached its heyday during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911 ) It is currently undergoing a revival with new artists emerging under the guidance of the older masters.

Rhythmic Dancers Table Figurine

The movement and balance of the body during dancing offers a myriad of fascinating shapes and forms for the artist. With added elegance and passion there is no shortage of inspiration to be captured. Even the most abstract artistic interpretation of dance can express the free spirit of a body in creative motion.

I’d venture to say that dance was the original performing art, evolving from the spontaneous expression of spiritual forces during tribal gatherings and also developed as a vehicle for storytelling and deity worship. This is evident in ancient rock paintings, which depicted the dancing of ceremonial performances and tribal celebrations vividly. Whether it be the spirit invocation of a shaman and their unpredictable body reactions during ecstatic trance states in healing rituals or the choreography of a group of dancers, all the entrancing dance movements have been recorded. Detailed dance performance were created by the ancient tribes as a means to pass down their history through the generations.
Dance is where chaos and harmony can merge and a dancer can transcend his individuality during a performance. The flexing muscles, the extended limbs, the exquisite balance and depth of rhythmic expression, during the sequence of his own sculpted movements, provides the perfect medium to be frozen in form by an artist, especially with sculpture. The cohesion of movement, mind and spirit providing an irresistible source of subject matter

Modernist magnificence

A new radical era of design evolved during the turn of the century which moved away from the excessive ornamental tradition which had dominated decor trends for decades to a streamlined, accessible functional design for a more minimalist aesthetic. The original designs of this modernist movement, regarded by some as non-conformist and even viewed by other contemporaries as audacious and scandalous, gradually gained wider acceptance and captivated the mainstream market when post war production got moving.

Marcel Breuer, the Bauhaus furniture designer and architect, began working with lightweight tubular steel in 1925, which together with flexible plywood had opened up a myriad of design possibilities to support the modernist design philosophy of clean lines and geometry. The new materials and production techniques were quickly adopted by the design greats of this era such as Alvar Aalto and his Finnish firm Artek, Americans Charles and Ray Eames, Le Corbusier from France, Swedish Bruno Mathsson and Gio Ponti and Carlo Mollino from Italy. Their styles were like a breath of fresh air, offering a radically different alternative to the cluttered, busy decorating ideals that were ready for an overhaul.

HANS J. WEGNER 'Ox' suite 1960
Molding techniques, especially with the new plastics, allowed the design elements to be pushed even further, while still adhering to simple lines, and the decorative pieces were also adapted to this modern aesthetic to compliment these innovative styles.
Most of the 20th Centuries art movements: futurism, cubism, constructivism, surrealism, abstract expressionism, art deco all contributed to the evoltution of modernistic design. Manufacturers took iconic elements from these styles and simplified them for mass production.Their influence is detectable and contributes to their subtle attraction.
The modernist simplicity, timeless elegance and high craftmanship has led to a longevity that has preserved its contemporary and compelling appeal, which is reflected in the values being fetched today in the market place.

Preston Singletary art glass

 Preston Singletary

Preston Singletary’s artistic direction shifted in the early 1990’s to re-connecting with his Native American influences and his Tlingit roots. North Pacific Coast artists such as Joe Brown gave him guidance to integrate spiritual and cultural aspects into his designs and delve into his ancestral past. Southwest Native symbols, animal spirits, icons, sacred motifs, supernatural beings and transformative themes became a focal point in his art. His interest in the “primitivism” of the Modern Art Movement”, where schematic abstract forms were expressed to embody the outside and inner worlds also became a key element in his interpretation of the indigenous art.
His works abound with myths and legends shown through using sacred natural designs such as wolves, frogs, bears, ravens, eagles, orcas, and humans; legendary creatures such as thunderbirds and sisiutls. Characteristic abstract designs are depicted with patterns following the formline styles of this Northwest Coastal Art. His cultural exploration is expressed with continuous, flowing, curvilinear lines that turn, swell and diminish in a prescribed manner with characteristic shapes such as ovoids, U forms and S forms.

Bill-Reid-gold-Dogfish-Brooch,-c.-1959.-From-'Bill-Reid'-by-Doris-Shadbolt

Bill Reid gold Dogfish Brooch, c. 1959. From ‘Bill Reid’ by Doris Shadbolt

During the early 20th century, very few First Nations artists in the Northwest Coast region were producing art. However the mid-20th century saw a revival of interest and production of Northwest Coast art, due to the influence of artists such as Bill Reid. This has continued and expanded with newer generations and Preston Singletary’s art exemplifies this. He has chosen a fresh medium of glass to represent his dynamic styles and his training included working with Venetian glass legend Lino Tagliapietra, and studying Swedish design at Kosta Boda. He has also collaborated with other glass and ceramic artists in the USA , Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia to diversify and broaden his skills and examples of this are shown below. Also two pieces of art by New Zealand Maori’s are displayed due to the similarities of the Northwest Coastal Art to the traditional styles of the Pacific Islanders.

” My work continues to evolve and connect my personal cultural perspective to current modern art movements, and I have received much attention for striving to keep the work fresh and relevant. I have been honored that my success has inspired other artists from underrepresented indigenous cultures to use glass and other non-traditional materials in their work, and hope that I can continue to encourage more innovation in this area as my career progresses. ” ~ Preston Singletary

Robert Davidson

Barbara Brotherton from the Seattle Art Museum claims that Canadian Robert Davidson is at the foundation level of reconstructing culture through visual art. “ For a long time what was called a ‘renaissance’ is really a reformulation and a rebirth of visual traditions that had been lost. It wasn’t until the 1970′s, after he’d studied the deeper meanings and age-old principles behind Haida art and design, that “abstract impulses” started flowing through his own paintings and carvings “, Brotherton says.
One of the interesting things about Davidson’s work is that while it obviously pays homage to the techniques, motifs and narratives that came before, it is distinctly of his own time. ( via westpacificreview.com )
Davidson states that “ each one of us is connected to the ancient ways by a thin thread. And when we come together, we form a thick rope “  The same can be said for the collective contribution of the North West native artists in rediscovering  their ancient art.

Ancient pottery wine amphora- Island of Delos Greece

Ancient pottery wine amphora found in the ruins on the Island of Delos, Greece

The pottery decorations of ancient cultures were instrumental in preserving valuable historical details about daily life, cultural perceptions, myths and deeper spiritual beliefs. Even calendars and astrological events were recorded on pots. Historians would have been entirely clueless about the lifestyles of some past cultures without leads from these clay time-capsules. Symbols, rituals, language, cult procedures, talismanic charms and folklore were embodied in their pottery art.
The neolithic Trypilian potters merged utilitarian purpose with an aesthetic awareness using painted surfaces, incised patterns and shape to reflect their art and beliefs. The real and mythical worlds of the ancients co-existed in their beliefs and this became immortalized through their artistic expression.Through the ages many material clues have been left in pottery art that has been deciphered and understood while many mysteries still remain. But their presence is enough to grant a thread of perception to the beliefs and spirit of their time. Lineages of the past were reinforced by these artistic records and also have been reconstructed where oral traditions had failed and written records had disappeared.

Anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski stated that myth was used “to strengthen tradition and endow it with a greater value and prestige by tracing it back to a higher, better and more supernatural reality of ancient events” This is clearly evidenced in the myths and legends vividly depicted on many ancient ceramics which contributed to the cohesion and defining aspect of the local cultures.
As the archaeologists have recovered more ancient pottery, the extent of distribution and contact between nations has been revealed with the movement of Aegean, Hellenic, Etruscan and Roman pottery. The desire to record historical features in art has pervaded most ancient cultures and the combination of aesthetics and utility in ancient pottery art ensured its survival because it was produced in greater numbers then specific art pieces. Ancient painted ceramics, quite often objects of beauty, were considered in their time to be the domain of humble craftsmen rather than of fine artists. Fortunately, the wares of the meek survived the ages to be appreciated in the present for their universal appeal and insight into ancient mysteries.

A diverse collection of ancient pottery.

” A common theme throughout my work is my interest in shapes, textures and colours found in nature. I find inspiration in volcanoes, fossils and geological formations, to name a few. Using materials like Kalahari sand, oxides, slip and multiple stoneware firings enable me to capture the weathered surfaces and patterns of the earth ” - Laura Du Toit, Cape Town, ZA

 Beginnings of vermilion red

The first use of the red vermilion pigment, made with ground cinnabar, was documented around 7000–8000 BC and it was found in a Turkish neolithic village which is currently called Catalhoyuk. In Spain cinnabar was mined in the beginning of about 5300 BC, while in China the first documented use of Cinnabar as a pigment was by the Yangshao culture (5000–4000 BC)
Vermilion red was esteemed by the Chinese to symbolize good fortune and joy. They used it to paint their temples, the carriages of the Emperor, and favored it as a printing paste for personal name chops. It was also used for unique red calligraphic ink reserved for Emperors. Chinese Taoists associated vermilion with eternity as it was accociated with the colour of life. Hence it was widely used to paint ceramics, to cover the walls and floors of rooms, and for ritual ceremonies.
Vermilion was also used by the peoples of Central and South America, to paint ceramics, figurines, murals, and for the decoration of burials abd tombs.. It was used in the Chavin Civilization (400 BC – 200 AD), and in the Maya, Sican, Moche, and Inca Empire. The major source was the Huancavelica mine in the Andes mountains in central Peru.
In India vermilion or sindoor as it is called is the symbol of fertility, and it is applied on the forehead as a dot known as a bindu or on the hair parting of the woman signifying that she is married. A key ritual in the tradirional Indian marriages is application of vermilion by the groom on his bride, signifying their marital bond, which she applies everyday for the rest of life till her husband’s death.
Vermilion was the primary red pigment used by European painters from the Renaissance until the 20th century. However, because of its cost and toxicity, it was almost entirely replaced by a new synthetic pigment, cadmium red, in the 20th century.

Curiously,  Brett Gorvy, co-head of contemporary art at Christie’s International, said red was the most lucrative colour in art works, followed by white, blue, yellow, green and black, in that order. Cheyenne Westphal, chairman of Contemporary Art Europe at Sotheby’s, also claimed that “With art it’s always very difficult to quantify, but you can see it has an overall effect. So if the colour red is in a work or art it tends to get more expensive than others.” This has also been fueled by the input of the Chinese market but all power to the majestic red.

A collection of unique ceramic pieces ranging from rarities to curiosities, with some beauties and the occasional oddities. Selected for their unique functionality, style and form. The first image at the top is a piece I recently chanced upon at a Chinese grocery store which they were selling as a plate warmer. Its width is 10 inches and has a depth of  2 1/4 inches while being hollow inside.. It had a spout on the left which was used for adding hot water and has the auspicious Ba Kua eight sides. They were also used for foot warmers and even suspended on a cord around the neck ( hence the holes in the lugs ) to warm the Tan Tien ( Sea Of  Chi ) which is at the navel region  It was on a clearance special for $5 and I didn’t hesitate to acquire it.  Obviously not in great demand. The second piece below was at the other end of the scale. This sold at the Treasures of the Qing Court auction at Sotheby’s for $1,797,670.

Black juglet from Jeruselum

These ” mini ” jugs date back to the Iron Age II, ca. 1000–586 B.C.E. It hasn’t yet been established why they were made in this diminutive size, but is has been assumed they were used for carrying precious perfume oils. They have been found mostly in tombs; so possibly they were burial gifts for the deceased.

Carved African terracotta pot -

 Carved African terracotta pot

Art is an integral feature in defining a culture and all the mysteries, diversity and complexities of Africa can be found in their artistic expression. Terracotta sculptural figures and heads were discovered from the Nok culture of Nigeria dating back to 500 BC and they demonstrated a strong abstract figural interpretation in their art. The Kongo people and the Sherbro from Sierra Leone were famous for their stone sculptures while the Benin were known for their ivory carving. The origin of the bronze casting tradition began with the Igbo-Ukwu tribe of Nigeria around the 9th century AD and reached its pinnacle with the Ife people from Yoruba.

Malangatana Valente Nguenha

As various African kingdoms accumulated riches through trade of gold, agriculture, precious stones, cloth and other goods, the health and appearance of their rulers were considered  to be an important metaphor for their kingdoms strength and stability. Ceremonial occasions were a demonstration of splendor and power and the wealthy kingdoms were active patrons of the arts and had their own guilds of exclusive artists. Precious works of art were commissioned for personal and devotional use. The court of Benin ( Nigeria ) exemplifies this and many exquisite pieces in the form of masks, sculptures and jewelery were created. Other artists, outside the court, sometimes recreated these pieces, especially the carved sculptures, for commercial trading.
The shamans and power association leaders of a tribe cultivated the ability to wield natural resources and spiritual energies through their masks, sculptures and performances, where their understanding of plants, animals and spirituality were on display. Organic and inorganic materials such as flora, feathers, horns, porcupine quills, herbs and other elements became incorporated into their arts by adding them to their masks and sculptures.
The acquisition and maintenance of masks, sculptures, and other artistic symbols of power constituted a significant part of a specialists’ training. The artistry was usually shrouded in secrecy including the materials used and the identity of the artist, who were held in high regard for their skill and reverence.
The aristocracy and attendants wore pendants and carried objects bearing symbols of political and spiritual power. For most of the African kingdoms, the royal families and their ancestors were venerated in the form of brass cast and wood carved statues which were displayed on royal alters.

Recognizable for their imposing forms with swollen cheeks and plump, big eyes. These masks were worn on the head like a crown. They were invested with a crucial role during the commemorations and the election of the king.

African art has been a dynamic source of inspiration for numerous Western artists. The highly stylized treatment of the human figure in African sculptures had a direct input into the development of the avant garde movements of the modern art of Matisee and Picasso and the painting styles of post-Impressionists Cézanne and Gauguin. Modernist artists were drawn to African sculpture and art because of its sophisticated approach to the abstraction of the human form. Modigliani made sketches of the elongated heart shaped faces of Baule masks and this became an influence in some of his sculptures and paintings. Likewise Constantin Brancusi, Modigliani’s friend, introduced stylized elements into his sculptures. Picasso claimed that African sculptures had helped him to understand his purpose as a painter, which was not to entertain with decorative images, but to mediate between perceived reality and the creativity of the human mind—to be freed, or “exorcised,” from fear of the unknown by giving form to it.

The ancient art of mosaics stands as a symbol of eternity, due to its adoption by notable architects and artists in many great places of worship and in the adornment of ancient buildings and homes. Monumental murals, facades, floors and ceilings were ideal features for the mosaic medium as it was durable and easily adapted to intricate shapes and designs. Some of the finest examples of mosaic art can be found in the ancient art from the Greco-Roman world. The most popular subject for mosaics was mythological scenes, such as the triumphs of Neptune or Dionysos, which are the most frequently found. The Orpheus myth (with animals) and the muses (Clio, Melpomene, Thalia, Terpsichore, Urania, Euterpe, Calliope, Polyhymnia and Erato), sometimes with the god Apollo, are also often illustrated. Inspiration could also come from daily life, like dancing, hunting, agriculture, fishing, as well as arts and crafts. Amphitheater activities such as gladiator fights and circus games were also a much-appreciated subject for mosaics. The most famous mosaics of the Roman world were created in Africa and in Syria, the two richest provinces of the Roman Empire.

Mosaics were also widely utilized in Islamic art, the medium being ideal for their use of complex geometric patterns and symbols on their secular buildings and huge Mosque structures. The Byzantine churches also contained many fine examples of this art form.

After the Roman authorities had decriminalised Christianity in the 4th Century, Constantine the Great and his mother Helena and the emerging Christian faith were prepared to build larger and more handsome edifices for worship than the furtive meeting-places (such as cave-churches).  The pagan outdoor architectural designs were replaced by temples for conducting worship indoors which eventually became grand architectural monuments of art featuring numerous depictions of saints and religious scenes.
Good early examples of the architectural basilica and use of mosaics include the Church of the Nativity at Bethlehem (6th century AD) and the church of St Elias at Thessalonica (5th century AD).

The word “mosaic” comes from the Italian word mazaico and the French word mozaique.

The magnificence of Byzantine architecture and mosaic art can be found in the two great basilicas of Ravenna in Italy. The most significant works all date back to between the fifth and sixth centuries after Basileus Justinian “The Great”, who became emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire in 527AD  with his royal headquarters in Constantinople, decided to liberate Italy from the Goths.
Images representing the mighty mosaics in ancient, antique and contemporary art are displayed below.

Native Latin American cultures developed mosaic art, the oldest pre-Columbian examples appear to date to around 600 BCE. Their mosaics featured precious stones such as tourquoise and coral and precious metals such as gold. and were used to adorn statues, ornament shields and body armor.

Japanese Shoraku Sasaki chawan-RubyLane

Japanese chawan in the traditional red and black by Shoraku Sasaki

This bowl received an award from the monk Kankei Moriyama.(1888-1955) and was named “Yume” – which means a dream.

( RubyLane )

Origins of Raku

The originator of raku in Japan was Sasaki Chojiro, who first produced raku pieces for the Japanese tea ceremony in the 16th century. He learnt the technique from his father Ameya, who was trained in the Ming Dynasty Sencai pottery tradition and was brought to Kyoto, Japan from China. The original chawan tea bowls were red and black and called ‘ Imma yaki ‘ These colors were favored because they represented the Yang elements which are grounding and support the tea ceremony principals of contemplation and austerity. This was further enhanced by using simple hand crafted forms while being balanced with the Yin forces of the abstract, asymmetrical shapes and the ethereal quality of the mysterious raku textures, appearance and colours.

Raku Procedures

Despite Raku being primarily decorative and rarely used for functional purposes, Raku has maintained a healthy level of popularity in the West. Some of the reasons for this are the diversity of  lustres and unique colours that are attainable, the creation of desirable crackle effects, the dramatic and exciting production process, the versatility of the glazes,  the unpredictable  “ one of a kind  “ outcomes and the relatively fast results that can be achieved. Adherents have also been drawn to Raku because of its deep tradition in the Japanese culture.
After the initial formation of the clay pieces which have then been dried, bisqued and cooled, they are ready for glazing. The glaze can be applied by spraying, brushing, dipping the piece in a glaze or drizzled.  After glazing the piece it is then re-fired in a raku kiln. The decorated pieces are fired again to 1800 F and within about an hour, when the desired melting of the glazes have been achieved, they are immediately removed while still glowing with special raku tongs ( the dramatic stage ) and quickly placed into a metal container filled with organic materials such as straw, leaves, pine needles, sawdust or paper, then quickly sealed to be smoked and cooled down.
The thermal shock causes the glazes to craze and carbon fills the cracks giving the glaze it’s distinctive crackle appearance, especially with the white based glazes. As the piece sits in the combustion chamber, the decreased oxygen causes a chemical reaction in the glazes, resulting in metallic, iridescent colors. One glaze can produce a variety of colors as flashing occurs in areas that are exposed to more or less amounts of oxygen. The colors achieved are spontaneous and unable to be replicated.
The natural un-glazed clay will become black from the smoking environment, while the glazed areas, due to the rapid cooling, will have the desirable crackle effect and/or look of lustres to the glaze. The piece is then cooled by quenching with water and cleaned. The glaze firing and reduction process generally takes between one to two hours. A raku kiln can be fired in 20 minutes, as opposed to 12 hours for a regular kiln. All these above factors have made Raku a popular choice for pottery workshops which has contributed to its growth.

This vase was coated with terra sigillata , a refined slip coating that is used to give a high satin gloss without the use of a glaze and burnished with a small stone at least three times before its initial bisque firing. It was then fired in my raku kiln. When the temperature reached approximately 1500 degrees F. it was removed from the kiln and horse hair held up against the hot pot. The black markings you see are what was left behind.
As the pot cooled it was fumed with an iron solution that gives it a warm fiery hue.

African American bust by Sargent Claude Johnson - Chester

Sargent Claude Johnson  - Chester – 1930

A collection of African American artworks, primarily focused on ceramic and sculptural pieces.  As I delved into the various Afro American art genres that I was able to source,  I was reminded of Ernie Barnes iconic album cover “Sugar Shack “ for Marvin Gaye’s 1976  “ I want You”.  The tapestry of  black dancers depicted  a writhing sensual embodiment of the human soul, captured by a collective primordial rhythm in motion. The newer art is still an affirmation of enthralling movement and colours and it was gratifying to discover it again,  exuding natural expression in the spirit of this transcendental aesthetic.

Doyle Lane – ( 1925 – 2002 )

Doyle Lane, whose work is in the collection of the California African American Museum in Los Angeles and will be featured in a Venice Biennale show in 2015, was apparently a modest man. “I don’t think an artist should really put his work on a pedestal because he isn’t the one to determine the aesthetic value,” he said in a 1981 interview with Studio Potter magazine. “When someone buys a piece of work, that is the only compliment. Anything else could just be flattery.” ( via LAtimes ) As a clay artist, Doyle Lane liked the mobility of ceramic art, “Why not take paintings out of doors,” he also declared in that 1981 interview, “where one may sit and watch the changing play of sunshine on the glazes and thus have changes of mood during the day?”

Head Of Queen Mother Alpha Lioness Brown Sugar Spinx

Ms. Kara Walker’s…Spinx,

FROM MY PURVIEW, has taken
the image of the sugar cane
hack’n, no history have’n, GRINNIG, SLAVE…and lifted her back up to her rightful
place as the never before seen, Ancient Queen, Royal Mate of the Alpha Lion King AKA The Spinx.
Ms. Walker’s image is not grin’…she has time-less secrets/ who
understands the mysteries of the Spinx and his/her equal?
Her head wrap bears secret symbols and Royal seals…
just like when the Soul Sisters Of All Shades today
choose to wrap their heads
in exotic wrap’ns
I thought that I heard somebody say that,”some good folks
found the bones of a woman who
may just be the mother of all of us…” Can I get a…can I… uh…can ah’ git ah…witness?

Kimmy Cantrell – Atlanta

http://www.artjaz.com/artists/kimmy/

Kimmy Cantrell’s  ideal is to show the beauty within flaws. In his own words, “Imperfections tell stories far more compelling than perfection.  I’ve always loved primitive art, and I try to reflect that raw, primitive style in my own interpretations. Some of my work is tribal, and some is more universal. We all have roots, and the roots tend to come out in the works we create.”  Written in the eyes and titles, vibrantly colored faces tell stories which reflect the artist own experiences. Another signature of Kimmy’s work is his series of mixed media collages. The unique composition of elements such as clay, copper and sometimes stainless steel evolved from his series of masks. “I want to move people with the passion expressed in my work”

Woodrow Nash

Woodrow Nash weaves undulating lines over the surface of his sculptures combined with natural motifs which emulate the flowing style of Art Nouveau infused with the traditional, graceful African forms derivative of 15th century Benin. With both his full length pieces and busts, he successfully creates a sense of comfortable intimacy and inclusiveness with his sculptures. The depth of his exploration of the spirit of his culture is palpable.

Czechoslavakia is blessed with a fascinating history of ceramic design which developed rapidly after the introduction of porcelain in the 1790′s.This was in the region around the town Karlovy Vary ( Carlsbad ) where rich deposits of kaolin could be found.  Decorative pottery production was prolific during the Art Nouveau/Jugendstil era through to the decades of Art Deco.

Royal Dux Bohemia

Royal Dux was originally known as the Duxer Porzellanmanufaktur or Dux Porcelain Manufactory, and was established in 1860 by Eduard Eichler in Czechoslovakia when it was known as Bohemia. By the turn of the century, the  firm specialized in porcelain statues and busts of Art Nouveau-style maidens, large porcelain figures, and ornate vases with three-dimensional sculptured figures embracing the surface. By 1937, the company had over 12,000 molds for porcelain. Typically, scenes of scantily clad, enchanting women would be cavorting by a pond surrounded by leaves, foliage and trees. The most successful development phase of Royal Dux was the Art Nouveau era when the ceramic modeler Alois Hampel worked for the company. Some of the original 19th century molds which were established at that time are in production to this day. The diverse range of Dux Art Deco and modernist figurines are still being admired and collected.   Royal Dux kneeling Art Deco figurine

Perception & Reality – Melbournian artist Andrew Rogers

2012

Upon arrival at the new Canberra airport, you are confronted with the 25 feet tall sculpture “ I Am ” by Andrew Rogers and upon exit, his 25 feet tall sculpture “ Perception & Reality ” comes into view.  All together 14 sculptures by various artists have been added to the airport and the adjacent Brindabella Business Park. This includes several brilliant pieces by the airports world renown sculptor-in-residence Ante Dabro, who has so far contributed 5 pieces. This is a mere appetizer for the abundance of sculptural art that can be found in Canberra. Despite having a modest population of around 379,000, the Australian capital city of Canberra is a cultural hub due to being the location for the National Art Gallery, the National Museum, the War Memorial and the Federal Parliament.
The architecturally planned national capital has a sculptural garden, which stretches from the Australian National Art Gallery down to the shores of Lake Burly Griffin, filled exclusively with native plants and trees. Planning for the Sculpture Garden began in the 70′s and some of the sculptures that had already been acquired reflected the Mid-Century modernist, abstract, industrial aethestic of that era. Works by Alexander Calder, Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore, and Clement Meadmore were early installations followed into the 80′s with sculptures by Aristide Maillol, Emile Antoine Bourdelle, Gaston Lachaise, Mark di Suvero, Bert Flugelman and Inge King.
In other locations in Canberra more wonderful Mid-Century pieces can be discovered by Robert Cooke, Margel Hinder, Herman Hohuas, Milan Vojsk and a 1961 sculpture by Tom Bass at the Civic Square.  There are many more contemporary sculptures by Australian and International artists being presented. Images of these works can be seen below. A GPS App called ‘Mobile Canberra’ is now available on iphone , Android and other tablet platforms, which shows the locations of the sculptures.

Chinese contemporary art began to began to open up to the world art arena in the 1980′s and 1990′s, and while comparatively in its infancy, it is now making a vibrant impact. A selection of the Chinese ceramicists and sculptors in the modern contemporary art field are represented below.

Xiao Wei / Zhengyin Art & Design

Chinese ceramicist  Xiao Wei, began in the field of ceramics then branched out into broader design projects involving interior decoration and consultancy under the banner of Zhenyin Design which was established in Beijing in 1997.
Zhengyin Art & Design collaborate with a team of local and international artists and architectural firms to create original art installations, ceramics, murals, sculptures and wall art specifically designed for a particular space.  A synthesis between contemporary concepts and traditional themes dominate the designs.

Zhan Wang

Many of Zhan Wang’s works concentrate on abstract forms, that go by many names such as floating stones, artificial rocks, or the famous, Scholar Rocks. These are large, highly textured rock-like pieces coated in chrome. In the Chinese culture, rocks are held in high esteem; rocks have been thought to possess the purest qi, or vital energy, and  traditionally were collected as objects of art and tools for meditation. In 2004, Zhan scaled Mount Everest and placed one of his own sculptures at the summit.

In 1966 Zhan Wang made the statement - “Placed in a traditional courtyard, a rockery satisfied people’s desire to return to Nature by offering them stone fragments from Nature. But huge changes in the world have made this traditional ideal increasingly out of date. I have thus used stainless steel to duplicate and transform the natural rockery into manufactured forms. The material’s glittering surface, ostentatious glamour, and illusory appearance make it an ideal medium to convey new dreams”

Sue Wang from CAFA Art Info describes Zhan Wang’s Rockery sculptures :  If ‘tradition’ and ‘contemporary’ are seen as poles apart, then Zhan Wang just used ‘stainless steel rockery stone’ to describe the intermediate zone by “Rockery Stone”. ‘Stone’ represents ‘tradition’, “it’s the basic element that formed the universe, representing aesthetic belief of a farming community”; ‘Stainless steel’ is a concentrated reflection of an industrialized reality. Zhan Wang thought it’s “the most representative material of this time, a metallic material that claims to never stain and can be mirror polished”. ‘Playing with’ the two materials, Zhan Wang touched the lifeline of the time.

Zoe Hillyard, Bennett Bean, Mette Maya Gregersen

Zoe’s patchwork ceramics, draw on the Japanese yobitsugi/wabi-sabi concept of the chi inherent in the imperfect moving towards perfection. She also integrates storytelling into her wares by using fabrics that have particular historical narratives. Bennett Bean’s ceramic sculptures use interlocking glazed panels that highlight the depth of field and expand the already charged dialogue between the contrasting shapes and patterns. The landscape of his larger then life compositions with competing elements of complexity, merge together in a harmonious conclusion. Mette Gregerson creates her ceramic forms like she is embalming an Egyptian mummy, while also infusing her ocean wave fascination into her sculptures.

I chose the following three contemporary artists because they all create highly dynamic ceramic art, using innovative and unique approaches to express a striking vibrancy.

Zoe Hillyard, UK

” My work and research activities are inspired by cultural exchange and strongly influenced by ethical concerns.  Travel, teaching and volunteering all influence the nature of my creative practice. I am particularly drawn to remote communities where lives are fundamentally shaped by landscape and climate, and am interested in how fibre and textile skills often play an important part in livelihood activities. The design process, for me, begins with materials - both raw and recycled and Ceramic Patchwork reflects this approach.  It builds on my interest in hand craft processes, construction and form, and in my belief that items should be treasured for the long-term.”

For the Lizzie Mary Collection,  Zoe created a blue and white digitally printed textile design using scanned imagery of lace. The fragments spanned four generations of her family. Some she made herself using her bobbin lace making skills she learnt as a teenager, the rest are pieces that her great-grandmother wore as detachable details on her Victorian dresses.

 Bennet Bean, USA

” I don’t make any distinctions between making things, cooking, gardening, and building houses.  Elements from the garden appear in paintings and the surface obsession of the pots appears in the house as consciousness of each decision about material and finish.  Each cross-pollinates.  Curiosity about how to express identity results in having my DNA done.  That image then surfaces in collages and then again in the rugs I create.  The paintings and the pots have both contributed their imagery to the rugs.  It’s a dance where ideas are applied in different ways depending on the medium.  “

An extract from a Bennett Bean essay on “Finding a place in the 21st Century”

“From the variety of choices available, I found the idea of the vessel the most personally interesting. It is the paradigm of historical ceramics and not appropriated from the art world. My exploration followed the same path as the painters. In keeping with the analytical approach of the modernist painters, the two characteristics of the vessel that I have chosen as my subject are decorative surface outside and space inside, with the concomitant unfolding of the relationship between these two elements. It is by mining these essential concepts that my work finds consistency and coherence. Each of us chooses and builds upon the objects of our historical antecedents. The majority of the clay work in the past fifty years has been driven by obsession with technique – moving from Raku to salt to wood fire in a slow evolution of identity through methods. It was my goal to avoid a ceramic identity defined by technique. Technique is of course there because we are object makers but, in my work, technique is always in the service of the idea.”

Mette Maya Gregersen, Denmark

“After a while working in fragments and burning away, I feel the need to construct pieces. This is an organic process built slowly using strips of clay that are first torn apart, then carefully wrapped around each other and put together

Every action in clay refers back to a mental state. There has to be a connection between thought, hand, and space, where each element investigates the other and creates a channel of communication. If I repeatedly fall into the same black hole then I will investigate that path, how I got there, and how I can get back up again.”

Ceramicist Mette Gregersen is  intrigued by the power of waves and their constant motion. She captures this eternal movement while enhancing the shapes of her sculptures further with the wrapping procedure that gives the impression of an Egyptian embalming , conjuring an ancient mystique.

Flower sushi rolls – Miki Nagata

For a master class in colour diversity, depth, shape and textures, its hard to go past plants and flowers. The colour richness is unsurpassed and countless design trends have been directly influenced by the features of theses natural wonders. From the symmetrical to the abstract, from random to mystically sequenced dimensions, all are innately structured in a sublime state of balance.
I regard the presentation of Japanese foods to sit at the pinnacle in the art of food display, so it was a logical choice for showing ceramics in a functional context. Miki Nagata’s work in the field of photographing Japanese food is as sumptuous as the subject. For the flowers I mainly chose the excellent displays used by Frances Palmer to promote her wares.

The  Italian ceramic arts of Fausto Melotti, Michele Fabbricatore and Fausto Salvi :

Several generations of ceramicists who encapsulate the freedom, spontaneity and flair of the Italian aesthetic.

La Pittura, 1939 - 1940-Fausto Melotti

‘La Pittura ‘ – Fausto Melotti

Fausto Melotti

Fausto Melotti was born into a musical family and he initially studied physics, mathematics and electrical engineering. In 1928, at the age of 27, he enrolled in the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, where he trained alongside Fontana with the sculptor Adolfo Wildt. Melotti’s first experiences as a ceramist occurred in 1929 after meeting the renowned architect, designer, writer, and ceramics enthusiast, Gio Ponti, who at that time was the artistic director for the Ricardo Ginori ceramic and porcelain manufactory. Melotti assisted Ponti with the execution of several of his designs, and the collaboration marked the beginning of his twenty-year relationship with the firm. While he would continue to work with ceramics for his entire career, his most concentrated involvement with the medium came in the aftermath of World War II. After discovering that his studio had been destroyed in the bombardment of Milan, he renewed his practice by renting out a kiln, thus initiating a fifteen-year period in which he only produced ceramics and terracotta sculptures.

Melotti was recognized, both nationally and internationally, as his contemporaries Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Louise Bourgeois and Lucio Fontana, as a key figure in the field of modern and contemporary sculpture, being distinguished for having been, from the beginning of the 30’s, a significant contributor in the renewal and development of the plastic language and its materials. Using terracotta, faience and plaster sculptures in mixed media including iron, ceramic and stainless steel works, drawings and sketches, the sculptural path 0f Fausto Melotti was closely linked to the world of visual arts. He merged the classical traditions with the trends of the European avant-garde, mixing disparate strains of 20th-century Italian art from Futurist modernity to the metaphysical elements of the Surrealists.

Fausto Salvi

Fausto discovered ceramics in the late 80’s, attending courses at the State Institute of Art of Ceramics in Faenza. ” When I began to work in ceramics, drawing was all-important for me. I enjoyed drawing on the white surface of majolica, being smooth and absorbent. I used to inscribe any surface it offered, plates, cylinders, jugs, vases. Any shape responded to my need to express myself through my drawings. Only later did I learn to communicate through shape and volume, I began to study the expressive possibilities of clay and modeling, more carefully. At the same time I began to think about the surfaces of my pieces as abstract textures and I started to use pure pigment. As I have worked in different series; I have never wanted to concentrate on only one of the elements I was exploring. The presence or absence of drawing has enabled me to communicate very different feelings and messages.”

During an exhibition of Australian contemporary ceramics at the Faenza Museum in the 90’s, Fausto was struck by how the absence of cumbersome traditions was really an advantage in terms of lightness and spontaneity. Some of his pieces, like Melotti, show hints of classical influence, but most are refreshingly original and visually engaging.

Michele Fabbricatore :

In 1992 at age of 20 MicheleI won a scholarship to do a pottery internship for three months in Maastricht in the Netherlands. In 1993 he began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence.

” My work is a large cauldron of everything that I like and I’m passionate about: Calvin Orlando Furioso, from fairy tales to mythology, all revisited and reinterpreted with an eye for the ironic and surreal.  My mission is to retrieve the most authentic part of me and see with a child’s unconditioned perception, which looks at the world with awe and wonder. And to relive the gift of enchantment that governs all beauty. Feeding this treasure that we all have within, with a desire and a commitment in my life where I hope these values become conveyed through my work.”

Mettlach Collection

This vast collection was made possible by Robert D. and Colette D. Wilson, who accumulated a huge number of Mettlach pieces over a 30-year period. AMOCA now houses their entire 3,000 piece Mettlach Collection, the largest collection of German Mettlach wares (dating from c. 1840-1915) in the world.
