In these testing times with the likes of Korean dictators over-compensating with missile threats, humour is the order of the day. Raygun Gothic and Dingbats, as a 50′s and 60′s architectural style, had a connection to missiles, as the ray-guns had a missile shape and some of the Dingbat features looked like atoms.
The term “Raygun Gothic” was coined by science fiction author William Gibson (who also coined the term “cyberspace” and created the cyberpunk genre) in his short story “The Gernsback Continuum” (1981). Techno-noir* aptly described it as ” retro futurism ” As a style, Raygun Gothic is seen in comics such as Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers and old sci-fi movies such as Metropolis and Forbidden Planet. Mad scientists in huge labs, industrial landscapes, advanced weaponry such as rayguns, rockets and robots. A vintage Sci-Fi look born from a merging of Art Deco and Streamline Moderne.

Most of the architecture styles have been represented in the ceramic arts. Classical, Baroque, Nouveau, Deco, Abstract expressionism, Modernist all had brilliant interpretations that helped to  popularise the forms. However both Dingbat and Raygun Gothic have been generally ignored.   Granted, they were fairly offbeat styles that didn’t really attract the same mass appeal.

I decided to go and search for some examples of this obscure style in ceramics, and I must admit it was a challenge. Even Google search was at sea.  Dingbats and Raygun Gothic are  connected to Googie Architecture, which had a tendency to be flashy and audacious. The original coffee shop known as Googie’s, which gave the movement its name, was designed by John Lautner and opened on LA’s Sunset Strip in 1949.

I only managed to find a few ceramic pieces that faithfully reflected the style , but earlier temple forms of the style came up which widened the scope. I also took the licence to include ray like decorative styles as a representation. I will add more examples in when they turn up.

Why does white look white

Pure, refreshing, refined, crisp, clear, illuminating and virtuous are some of the descriptive terms that come to mind for the colour white. This majestic colour has an intriguing dynamic in that it is without hue yet contains all colours of the light spectrum.
White is the color the human eye sees when it looks at light which contains all the wavelengths of the visible spectrum. This light stimulates all three types of color sensitive cone cells in the eye in nearly equal amounts. The reason substances appear white is because their surfaces reflect back most of the light that strikes them without absorbing any colors.

475px-350px-Maler_der_Grabkammer_

White was connnected with the goddess Isis in ancient Egypt. The priests and priestesses of Isis dressed only in white linen. Similarily, in ancient Rome, the priestesses of the goddess Vesta dressed in white linen robes, a white palla or shawl, and a white veil. White symbolized their purity, loyalty, and chastity. A plain white toga was worn for ceremonial occasions by all Roman citizens over the age of 14-18. No Roman man was allowed to appear in the Roman forum without a toga.

During the Middle Ages, painters rarely ever mixed colors; but in the Renaissance, the influential humanist and scholar Leon Battista Alberti encouraged artists to add white to their colors to make them lighter and brighter. This was adopted by numerous painters, and the palette of the Renaissance was considerably more vivid.

White porcelain originated in China and was widely produced due to its translucency, strength and hardness. It became highly prized after it was exported to the Islamic world and onto Europe.

Paper in the clay changes the molecular structure of the clay body. The paper burns out of the clay in the kiln after about 300° and then the clay is as normal.Paper clay will withstand multiple re-dampening so you can make changes in the form. It will also withstand forced drying.

 Futuristic white :

The colour white has quite often featured in futuristic scenes in movies and with modern décor. Predominant use of the colour promotes a minimalist, uncluttered appearance and clean contemporary lines. This could be a reflection of a subconscious desire to have a future that fades to white rather then black and maintains a purity and order.

While looking for info on Feng Shui , I came across the blog of Fengyuqinsheng, which has the translation of ” Wind And Rain Piano “. This is the name Yang Fuhua, based in  Shanghai, uses for his photography. After looking through his photos it became apparent in his large body of work that the 61 year old Yang Wuhua had taken some images of artworks in the Shanghai museums and galleries. He used a Nikon 700 for most of the photos. Excellent photography more than worthy of a post.

Art Nouveau – the enticing style of a new century

The evolution of Art Nouveau

In 1893 Edmond Lachenal introduced a new range of matt glazes that became the hallmark of his mature style – mat email veloute ( matt velvet opaque glaze ). It was created by  immersing a standard glossy glaze into a  a hydroflouric acid bath, stripping it back to a matt glaze. This was highly symbolic of the more formal classical styles being dissolved to usher in a new era.

The colourful, soft textured, ethereal glazes were perfectly suited to the dreamy, organic appearances of the emerging Art Nouveau designs. The muted palette gained instance acceptance and the Musee des Art Decoartifs purchased a Lachenal ceramic piece with this glaze in 1894. Simultaneously in the 1890‘s Jean Carries, Auguste Delaherche and Ernest Chaplet were also experimenting with muted earth tones. Another innovation in Lachanel’s work were his forms became more sculptural and organic. So plants weren’t merely painted on the surface but became integrated into the surface form itself. Critics praised this happy union of naturalistic forms complimented by the matt glazes as robustly graceful.

The botanical vases with an organic appearance had a resemblance to the Japanese carved stone arts. This was no mere coincidence as the French designers in the 1880′s and 1890′s such as Emile Galle had been forging new styles based on nature which reflected their inspiration from the Japanese aethestic. Since 1854, Japan had opened up its trade with the rest of the world and Japanese art flooded into the European markets. The beauty and refinement of their paintings had an immediate influence on the artists of Europe

Edmond Lachenal also began casting and glazing the work of independent sculptors. This practice was already a major aspect of Émile Müller’s firm, Tuileries d’Ivry. Then the idea was taken over by artisan-al potteries such as that of Alexandre Bigot. The collaboration between sculptor and art potter had a special currency; the concept of a fusion of all the arts, both high and low, were frequently discussed. He produced ceramic sculptural pieces for Auguste Rodin (1895), Daillion ( 1895), Agnes de Frumerie (1896-1906), Ferdinand Faivre (1897), Luca Madrassi (1894) and Max Blondat (1904). His collaboration with the Swedish figural sculptor , Frumerie,  resulted in her applying her talents to decorative vases, which produced works consisting of maidens among oversize flowers, dejected Eves, dancing nymphs entwined in vines and leaves and other nature themes.

In the excellent BBC series “ The Allure of Art Nouveau “ ( see below ), the following story was related by Alfonso Mucha’s grandson -
During the holiday season of December 1894, the struggling Czech artist/painter Alphonso Mucha, happened to be in a Paris print shop when the printer arrived with a request for an urgent poster promoting Sarah Bernhardt’s new play ” Gismonda “. As most of the Parisian artists were out of town on holidays, Mucha was in luck and received the commission. When the printer saw the result 2 weeks later, he was initially shocked by the style and muted colours that Mucha had produced. However Bernhardt loved the artwork immediately and gave Mucha an embrace, declaring ” you have just made me immortal “.

379px-1099px-Mucha-Gismondo-poster

Alfonso Mucha Gismondo poster

After the introduction of the poster on the 1st of January in 1895,  this turned out to be quite a prophetic statement, as the poster was an overnight sensation and was continually souvenired off walls. It was also a pivotal moment, being one of the first examples of inexpensive art being mass produced for general consumption. Mucha produced a flurry of paintings, posters, advertisements and book illustrations, as well as designs for jewellery carpets, wallpaper, and theatre sets in what was termed initially the Mucha Style but became known as Art Nouveau (French for ‘new art’) The promotion and development of Art Nouveau was rapid in architecture, ceramics, advertising and design and flourished for around 15 years.
Aubrey Beardsley’s illustration’s in Britain, Hestor Guimard’s design of the Paris Metro, Mary McDonnald in Glasgow, the architecture of Victor Horta in Brussels along with Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona and the Jugendstil secessionist  movement in Vienna all drank from the same fountain of creative elixir and inspiration during this extraordinary time. Edmond Lachenal continued his adventurous Art Nouveau ceramics into the 20th century with flamboyant forms and rhythms in his designs.

” My way of working is based on my personal “opened eyes” and “looking firstly” point of view. I try to transfer this sensation to my works, and I consider them good when opening the kiln I don’t recognise the pieces as mine and I get surprised. ” ~ Rafael Pérez 2012

 Ruth Duckworth   ( 1919 – 2009 ):

Ruth approached clay as a sculptor rather as a potter, and brought an aesthetic rigour to her refined vessel forms, figurative sculptures and installations. She helped shape a new way of thinking about ceramics in the second half of the 20th century, and was the recipient of many awards for her extraordinary contribution to the arts.

Shozo Michikawa :

Shozo Michikawa was born in Hokkaido, the most northern area of Japan. He initially had a career in business but took up evening classes in art where he discovered his talent and passion for pottery. A few years later in the 1970′s, Shozo made the decision to give up his life in business and to focus on creating ceramics.

In July 2005, Shozo was given the rare honour as being the first Japanese artist to have a solo exhibition of his art in The Forbidden City in Beijing.

He has widely exhibited in Japan and around the world, including the Philippines, Mongolia, France, China, New York and London.

 Ewen Henderson :

For Henderson, “fluxed earth”, as he called clay, was capable of being stretched and teased into complex new forms. His construction methods produced objects with a multiplicity of colour and textures, edges and interior spaces. His mastery of form was based on his insights as a painter, and he always stressed drawing as the key to his three-dimensional achievements. In the late 80s, Henderson’s ceramics became more sculptural, and he largely abandoned the vessel in favour of intricate open structures – often monumental – investigating his interest in intersecting volumes, spaces, edges and contours: a three-dimensional development of Cubism.

Ciudad Perdida, Colombia.- Accidentally discovered in 1975 by looters, Ciudad Perdida (The Lost City) is home to the indigenous Kogi, descendants of the Tayrona civilization who inhabited the region from 200-1650AD, predating Machu Picchu by 650 years. Among the 250 Tayrona towns, Ciudad Perdida is the largest and most impressive, suggesting that it may have been the social, political and economic centre. More than 200 structures were uncovered across 30 hectares, including a hand-made beaded terrace.

Bees on their knees

Just a few days back Europe banned the use of bee harming pesticides. The diminishing bee populations have provoked this decisive action .  Bees from Tasmania, Australia are being exported by the container load to places like California where they are used to pollinate the fruit and nut plantations, due to the local bee colonies being lost to the parasitic mite Varroa destructor. Apart from Australia, this has become a global phenomena. There is also the little-understood phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder (or CCD)  where worker bees from a beehive or honey bee colony abruptly disappear. The imported bees don’t hang around the orchards for long after pollinating. In beespeak this can be translated to “lets get the hell out of here “

Remedial programmes are being initiated to modify the use of pesticides and herbicides to try and regain some balance. Lets hope it not too little too late. Apparently some feral bee populations are now recovering—it appears they have been naturally selected for Varroa resistance. During the recent summer in Australia, which had record breaking heat , honey production fell dramatically because the native flowers withered. Bees were having such a lousy time on the pollen trail that the bee keepers stopped taking honey from the hives. It was only the gardens in and near the cities that helped the honey production. Lets hope that popular expression ” the birds and the bees ” will not have to be modified to something like, ” ok son, I want to tell about the birds and the beetles “.

The mug would have to be the most utilised item of functional ceramic wares.  In an age of  hi-tech and tough composite materials, it is remarkable that  ceramic materials are still favoured for mugs, even though they are breakable and on the bulky side. Whether it is earthenware, bone china, porcelain or stoneware, it’s hard to beat the organic earthiness of a ceramic mug. With the caffeine connoisseurs,  some people do over 30 cups a day, so I’d imagine a certain amount of bonding would be going on with their trusty ol’ coffee mug. The vehicle of the morning lifeline to get the day started and the companion of  the evening hot chocolate to help close it down.

Pure trivia .      The next time you indulge a coffee with a doughnut, you might be interested to know :  the mug serves as one of the most popular examples of homeomorphism in topology. Two objects are homeomorphic if one can be deformed into the other without cutting or gluing. Thus in topology, a mug is equivalent (homeomorphic) to a doughnut (torus) as it can be reshaped into a doughnut by a continuous deformation, without cutting, breaking, punching holes or gluing.

Ancient Egyptian Art and Pottery

Art and spirituality were deeply entwined in ancient Egypt. Religion was interwoven, not only into the Pharaohs power, but into life itself. It was the deity of a town who the people turned to, in order to prevent the everyday hazards of living. They used magic spells, charms, folklore and amulets to appeal to the deity for protection against hazards, and to intercede on their behalf, for anything from the Nile flooding, to sowing seeds and harvesting crops, to protection from poisonous snakes, and for safe childbirth. The temples were the focal point for ceremonies, offerings and art. The walls were usually covered in symbols, hieroglyphics and paintings, which documented their history, life and spiritual structures and beliefs.

397px-303px-Egypt---Luxor

Keen observation and exact representation of actual life and nature, and strict conformity to a set of rules regarding representation of three dimensional forms dominated the character and style of the art of ancient Egypt. In order to clearly define the social hierarchy of a situation, figures were drawn to sizes based not on their distance from the painter’s point of view, but on relative importance. For instance, the Pharaoh would be drawn as the largest figure in a painting no matter where he was situated, and a greater God would be drawn larger than a lesser god.

The Ancient Egyptian art style known as Amarna Art was a style of art that was adopted in the Amarna Period (i.e. during and just after the reign of Akhenaten in the late Eighteenth Dynasty, and is noticeably different from more conventional Egyptian art styles.

It is characterized by a sense of movement and activity in images, with figures having raised heads, many figures overlapping and many scenes being crowded and busy. The most admired artists were those who replicated the stylized depictions of Egypt’s most venerated figures.

French street photographer – Robert Doisneau

I admire the photography of Robert Doisneau  and even though he has been celebrated many times on the net, I’m compelled to do a post on the art he created with his 35mm Leica.

Robert Doisneau is one of France’s favourite photographers, best known for his street photography and his many playful images of everyday French life. As one of the first photographers to do outdoor photojournalism, his prolific output covered ironic images of amusing juxtapositions, mingling social classes, and eccentrics in contemporary Paris streets and cafes.

Roberts deep appreciation of the pure moments he witnessed on the streets of Paris was continually evident in his images and was his ongoing affirmation of the beauty of life and his love for humanity. I feel this personal quality bestowed him the gift of being in the right place at the right time to observe these visual treats unfolding.

Doisneau captured a charming vision of human frailty,  peoples foibles and life as a series of quiet, incongruous moments. He made the claim,  “ the marvels of daily life are exciting; no movie director can arrange the unexpected that you find in the street. “   His photographs over the course of several decades encapsulate a great record of life on the streets of France.

‘” I like people for their weaknesses and faults. I get on well with ordinary people. We talk. We start with the weather, and little by little we get to the important things. When I photograph them it is not as if I were examining them with a magnifying glass, like a cold and scientific observer. It’s very brotherly. And it’s better, isn’t it, to shed some light on those people who are never in the limelight.” ~ Robert Doisneau

Contemporary Ceramic Art

Contemporary ceramics, innovative pottery and ceramics, céramique nouveau, avant garde and cutting edge ceramic design and techniques are featured in this post. Add in modernist, postmodern and abstract and that pretty much covers the spectrum of styles on display. Its always refreshing to see artists take risks and successfully create new innovations or invent new interpretations of particular styles.

This post will be updated on a weekly basis.

“ Between the moment of seeing something and the sense we then make of it lies a place of questioning. For me it is the most alive place in our consciousness, bringing the unconscious to life through processes of emotional recognition and rationalizing our references. My work takes the energy of polarities, formal contradictions, impacts and merging as the beginning of a journey to this place.”  - Jonathan Middlemiss

Minoan pottery vessel  - 1800 – 1700 BC

A jug with a contemporary,  modernist appearance and in its time would probably have been regarded as contemporary. Sea life imagery was popular with the Minoan’s for pottery decoration which most likely explains the flowing, fluid style.

Egyptian  New-Kingdom (Dynasty-18) glassware

The abstract decorative styles of the Epyptian glass were a departure from the more symmetrical panels and geometric patterns that were favoured for the pottery. For the decoration, one or more thin colored rods were wound spirally over the glass while it was still soft. Before these rods hardened they were moved up and down with metal pins to produce waves, garlands, arches and leaf or feather patterns.

“All my life I have struggled with writing, now my work is completely covered in text. This paradigm shift has allowed me to experiment in different art forms, and face fears through the medium of art. An interesting adventure in self-discovery! The text in my pieces acts on several levels. For instance, it has texture, pattern, mystery and a path to look inward to decipher a glimpse into my private thoughts.
I am fascinated by the rhythmic qualities created by color, texture, and patterns. Decoration and the act of decorating are essential because it celebrates and enhances form and speaks purely of aesthetics. I use pottery as a vehicle to explore decoration and other formal questions. It allows me to investigate form, space and image. My greatest satisfaction comes from thoroughly filling surfaces with color and finely detailed decoration in a spirit that I feel is playful and whimsical. My attempt is to make the environment an expressive participant and to address the importance of aesthetics in our daily lives.” Connie Norman

Swan Gourd, 2007 -  Elizabeth Shriver

“I work with clay to create an array of graceful, sensuous, organic forms. These pieces are made through a variety of hand-building methods such as slab-building, coiling, pinching, and forming with molds. Rarely relying on glaze, I use textures, stains, and colored clay to add visual and tactile interest. I am drawn toward neutral earth tones that complement rather than distract from my intricate sculptural vessels. The curving lines and interplay of light and shadow in my work generate an illusion of movement, giving each piece an almost lifelike quality. A successful piece is one that begs to be touched as well as explored visually.”  - Elizabeth Shriver

” Honestly the first thing that really attracted me to wood kilns was the sound.  Depending on the burner design, gas kilns can sometimes sound like a jet engine.  Once while firing a very loud gas kiln in college I walked over to where some others were firing the wood kiln.  The only sound was a soft but powerful drawing sound from the entry and exit flues, though their kiln was just as hot as mine.  Since then I have come to find the effects from certain styles of wood kilns to be uniquely appropriate for my current work.  The process is also interesting and rewarding. ”  - Eric Knoche

Lynx Lisa Larson Gustavsberg

Lynx – Lisa Larson, Gustavsberg

Lisa Larson, born 1931, is a Swedish ceramic designer who started at Gustavsberg Porcelain Factory in 1953. She was hired by the famous Stig Lindberg who recognized and nurtured her gift for design. The Mid -Century modernist touch is apparent in many of her works. In 1981 she left Gustavsberg to work freelance as a sculptural artist and designer for various Swedish companies and the German porcelain manufacturer Rosenthal. She did stints at various ceramic companies including Duka, Kooperativa Förbundet and Åhléns .

During this time she created several hundred different designs – many of which became design classics, sought after by antique dealers and private collectors. Lisa Larson is best known for her humorous and friendly figures, generous shapes and artfully drawn incised decoration. Even though she created appealing ceramic wares, her talent for the charming characterization of domestic and exotic animals in her ceramic figurines and sculptures became the most popular.

Moses by Lisa Larson – Gustavsberg Ceramic Studio

In 1992 she founded the Gustavsberg Ceramic Studio with her colleagues Franco Nicolosi and Siv Solin. Their ceramics are produced on a small scale by a team of master craftsmen and women who continue the traditional crafts of mold making, glazing and hand painting. Lisa Larson is still actively working on creating and producing new ceramic designs, while her body of work is being discovered and rediscovered by many outside of Sweden.

70 years ago, Wilhelm Kage started Gustavsberg Studio, or “G-studio”. It was launched as an “aesthetic laboratory” within the factory frames. The studio was described at the time as an idyllic oasis in industrijäktet, an idéverkstad, where the work could be done in peace and quiet without chords and office hours, as a “spiritual cycle path alongside the mass production autostrada”.

American Modernist Ceramic Artists

It is generally recognised that Modernist design had its initial inception in Europe in 1919, with the opening of the Bauhaus school of Design in Germany. It was founded with the idea of creating a “total” work of art in which all arts, including architecture, would eventually be brought together. The Bauhaus style became one of the most influential currents in Modernist architecture and modern design. This was also the major driving force behind the Mid-Century era of art, which spanned from the early 1940′s to the early 80′s. In the USA, the sparse, clean lines of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture and the emerging acceptance of the Scandinavian design ethic, had an incisive influence on interior design and ceramic styles. Below are a collection of some of the many American artists that made fantastic  contributions to this unique phase of art and design.

 Clyde Burt :

Ceramic artist Clyde Burt (1922-1981) is widely recognized as a pioneer in the American studio ceramics movement. He studied at Fort Wayne Art School and the Cape Cod School of Art and completed graduate work under Maija Grotell at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He exhibited at the Ceramic Nationals in Syracuse in 1954, 1956 and 1958. In 1957 he won the Art Institute of Chicago Designer-Craftsman Award. His pieces are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Everson Museum of Art.

 Jerome and Evelyn Ackerman :

Jerome and Evelyn Ackerman are skilled craftsmen and designers who were instrumental in defining Mid-Century Modern home decor.  After attending the “For Modern Living” exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1949, where they encountered the design duo of Charles and Ray Eames, the couple decided to devote a life and career to design . Here, for their generation, was a fresh and exciting alternative to the “mundane, what-your-mother-had, doilies-on-a-table” kind of traditional home decor. “We didn’t know we had missed it, because it hadn’t been there. * Jerome recalls, “If the Eames can do it, why can’t we?”; so they opened the Jenev Design Studio (a combination of their names) in West Los Angeles. They began producing slip-cast ceramics and eventually expanded their offering to include a  wide variety of home decor and architectural elements. The business name changed to ERA Industries in 1956.

Gertrud & Otto Natzler :

Gertrud  Natzler’s collaboration with her husband, Otto Natzler, extended over almost four decades and produced some of the twentieth century’s finest ceramics. They are held by over seventy museums throughout the world and by countless private collections. Her nearly twenty-five thousand hand-thrown pots, bowls, and bottles are celebrated for their refinement, delicacy, and proportion  Her husband brought exceptional color and texture to the work with the glazes he invented and developed by experimentation, carefully documenting several thousand formulas.

Eva Zeisel :  ( 1906 –  2011 )

Known for her organic modernist ceramic works, Eva Zeisel was truly one of the foremost designers of the Twentieth Century, with a career that spanned into the Twenty First Century. She was the first designer in America to produce an all white dinner service. After settling in the USA, she started designing for pretty large-sized companies like General Mills, Rosenthal China, Castelton China and more. Zeisel was also proud to share her knowledge, and eventually became a professor of Industrial Design at the Pratt Institute in New York. One of her career highlights was in 1946, where she had a one-woman show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She was still designing at the age of 100.

Eva Zeisel was continually intrigued by what she called her “playful search for beauty.” A person of delightfully defiant spirit, the designer was just beginning her career when she declared war on the fashionable avant-garde. “I didn’t accept the purism of modern design,” she said. “In my definition, if it gave beauty to the eye, it was beauty.”

 Beatrice Wood :  (1893-1998)

As a potter, Wood was fascinated by the glazing process from the beginning, and dedicated much energy to the study of luster glazing techniques. She also studied briefly with master potters Getrud and Otto Natzler in 1940, who impressed upon her the value of the ceramic vessel as fine art. . In 1948 Wood began to establish a home and studio in Ojai,California and over the next fifteen years began perfecting her own version of the luster glaze.

She was lifelong member of the Theosophical Society which would greatly influence her artistic philosophies. Her path was also shaped by Dada, the art movement of which Wood was a seminal part, which rejected reason and logic; prizing nonsense, irrationality and intuition. By the early 1970’s, Beatrice Wood had established a reputation as a fine artist and emerged as a leading American exponent of luster pottery. She eventually turned her focus to more complex, decorative vessels, and her work was increasingly sought after by galleries and museums. By the time of her death at the age of 105, Wood had become a well-recognized figure in the world of ceramic art, renowned as much for her luster glazes as for her longevity, vitality, and charm.

As this is the latest instalment of pottery whimsical, the only thing being revealed here is more ceramic oddities, a few quirky sculptures and other amusing art pieces. The usual guidelines apply … from the sublime to the enthralling, from frivolous to sobering, ponderous to far reaching, ordinary to excellent, ancient to now and anything in between and before and after.

Life without whimsy is like a joke without a punchline …Oscar Weld

Functional Ceramic Wares

The trusty pot has done a sterling job at serving humanity for a long time. An enduring symbol of sustenance and one of the earliest forms of art in the home, especially in the poorer households. Whether it was just a simple functional form or had decorative designs and colourful glazes, it reflected artistry. Both the Chinese and the Japanese believed the digestive system was ruled by the Earth element, so it was a natural symbiosis to use ceramic wares for serving and consuming foods and beverages. Also for cooking it was the most favoured. They still believe that for preparing medicinal herbs, a plain unglazed pot is the most ideal.

This post features a collection of functional pieces, centred around  domestic food preparation, storage  and presentation.

Lost Ghost Gum

When I took my dog for a stroll, the first thing that would confront me when ascending the steep hill near my home, was this magnificent old Ghost Gum Tree. Situated in a commanding position like a guardian overlooking the valley below, it was a vision of grace, endurance and power. Some have a lifespan of over 500 years, so I was dismayed to see it being removed with chainsaws recently.  A vision not to behold ! Apparently a branch was diseased but overall the tree looked healthy to me.

These iconic Australian trees  don’t occur naturally in prolific  numbers and have the status of being sacred according to the indigenous Australians. Its long and smooth branches have a serpent like quality. This Ghost Gum was over 50 feet in height. The only place it will exist now is in Google maps which is where I grabbed this image from.

473px-560px-

This majestic Ghost Gum is also in the neighbourhood and has the twisting, weaving, undulating branches that are similar to one of  its sacred cousins, the Oak Tree. This one is on private property, so it hopefully won’t fall to a similar fate.

Above sculpture by Rieke van der Stoep –  ” Crosswind “

I noticed while sourcing images for my post ” Figurines Of Intrigue ” that the figurines of the female form were in predominance, so I decided to dedicate a post purely on this theme. Most of the female ceramic figurines seem to be created by women whereas the sculptural female art forms have a more equal representation between male and female artists. This post will be updated on a weekly basis.

kurtis bell bronze sculpture

Kurtis Bell  -  Abigail, Abby’s Angel ‘

Kurtis Bell never intended to be a sculptor. He was painting and wanted to come up with some way to have a model pose for him without the cost of a model, which he could not afford. His idea was to quickly sculpt the image he wanted to paint so he would have the subject and pose he wanted for a reference. Then he could reclaim the clay and start over.
He found he was better at sculpting than painting and now mainly does  sculpting.

This bronze sculpture of an angel bathing by a stream was created for his recently departed dog Abby.

Rene Buthaud and Jean Mayodon were born seven years apart during the formative years of Art Nouveau around the turn of the 19th century. Rene Buthaud studied painting and engraving at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux from 1903 to 1907 and then went to Pairs to study at the École des Beaux-Arts until 1913. Jean Mayodon had no formal training but lived in a community of artists in Serves and was influenced, especially in the classical styles, by artists he had met such as Henri Cros, Claude Monet, Isadora Duncan, Rodin and Bourdelle. Before he began his career producing ceramics in 1912 he spent 2 years in London doing antique restoration. He later went on  to assume the artistic leadership of the Manufacture of Sèvre in 1941, after having been its artistic counsellor in 1934.
After serving in WWI in 1918,, Rene Buthaud, with the encouragement of his colleagues in Bordeaux, the painters Jean Dupas and René Bissiere,  took up decorative ceramics. His early naturalistic, vegetal styles eventually gave way to more Art Deco geometirc designs along with the introduction of primitive and classical themes and nude figures. These were stylistically adapted to the shape of his vases with a modernist touch. He favoured the female form and his pieces were populated with mythological goddesses, idealized female figures and stylized Odalisques, sometimes in narrative scenes. Ancient Greek, Persian and Oriental styles were utilised.

Similiarily, Jean Mayadon developed decoative styles with figurative illustrations of exquisite quality and the vivid movement he infused in his ceramic works invoked the traditions of ancient antiquity using Centaurs, Sirens, Mermen, Mermaids and Goddesses and stylized animals as subject matter.

Both Buthaud and Mayodon were highly innovative with their glazing techniques including their wide use of craquelure glazes. In 1934 Rene Buthaud began to further develop the use of craquelure glaze, referring to it as ” peau de serpant z” for its snakeskin like appearance. Jean Mayodon favoured a gold crackling and achieved vibrant colours with low temperature firing using metal oxides fired up to 6 times, reglazing with each firing. Deep saffrons, tourquoise and jade greens and rich reds were developed.

The Museum of Decorative Arts in Bordeaux celebrates René Buthaud in its spaces and retains fifty of his works.  Both Rene Buthaud and Jean Mayodon are recognized as being influential in the development of the Art Deco style.

Bobby Jaber

Bobby Jaber, a porcelain artist with a BS in the Sciences and a Masters of Fine Arts, has been a high school chemistry and physics teacher for more than 25 years. In his evolving Octahedral Porcelain Process, Jaber effortlessly combines elements from both the sciences and the arts. Seven years in its evolution, this approach to sculpting spherical porcelain vessels focuses on combining the exactitude of measurement, the mathematics of the sphere and exercises in geometry with the unique aesthetics of embedded design. The embedded geometric design patterns of these unique porcelain vessels embody many of  Buckminster Fuller’s elaborations of synergetics, a geometric system based on his attempts to understand “Nature’s Design.”

This short documentary has been produced by Bobby’s nephew Dave Altizer.

 Diana Fayt

Moving to San Francisco in the early nineties, Diana made her way as a server in restaurants while cultivating her artistic vision. It was in one of theses restaurants she met businesswoman Maggie Nugent of Synergy Designs, a ceramics wholesale outfit. Diana began designing for Synergy shortly thereafter. Her tenure with Synergy sent her back to Hungary, a factory in Hodmezovasarhely (Beavertown) where the Diana Fayt collection was produced. The work was imported and sold in the U.S from 1998 until 2002.

Drawing on her background as a painter, sculptor, printmaker and clayer, her surfaces are alive with strange and exotic stories, part folklore and part personal narrative. Diana has continued to produce her own enigmatic, one of a kind work.

Contemporary Spanish Ceramic Arts

You only have to look at  architecture of Spain to see how bold and adventurous the Spanish are with their avant garde, abstract and evolving post modern styles. Their passion, impulsiveness and spiritual instincts lend itself to having a natural flair for unique contemporary designs. The likes of Picasso and Gaudi laid down deep foundations for the artists to expand upon and in Spain it is embraced as being culturally enriching and essential for the soul of the nation.
Their ceramics and pottery are blessed with the same flair and creativity.  Here is a collection of Spanish ceramicists that have contributed to their contemporary aesthetics.

Carme Collell

1998 Sinking Blue

Sinking Blue – Carme Collell   1998

Carme was born in Barcelona in 1951. While studying a Master in Art and Education at New York University, she was introduced to ceramics by Lydia Buzis. . In 1979-80 she went on to study at the ceramics workshop of Josep Collell in Montevideo, Uruguay, along with taking drawing and painting classes with Guillermo Fernandez.  It was here she developed the technique of applying an oiled and burnished slip, single fired at 1080C.

Her work is represented in major collections in Spain and abroad, including: Museum Chateauroux in France, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Garth Clark Gallery in New York.

 Miguel Molet

Miguel Molet uses thorough treatment of his clays with polishing during the development of the piece or  terra sigellata  in preparing his pre-fired pots, a technique which has been revived by contempoary ceramicists, from ancient procedures dating back to 600 BC in Greece. He further finishes his pieces with smoking techniques, either naked Raku, carbonation in a closed oven, or simple smoked paper, wood, and other fuels.
